Location is truly magnificent. Our rooms were like a time portal and the hotel is a grand old building with real character. Staff are friendly and informed, although you may struggle to convey some things if not speaking Japanese. Each room had a solid welcome kit. There are 3 lovely and clean onsen - the best one is reserved for men in the mornings and women in the evenings. If you like full tatami mat rooms, putting out your own futons to your own desired spot and thickness, not being disturbed in your room, and having a cute walk to the train station down a picturesque valley, this is the spot for you. It was beautiful, windswept, cold and peaceful in the valley, with the cutest train and some lovely mountains to climb right outside. It's rare to find a property with this much history and authenticity on a booking site like this and with so many minute adjustments to suit a more modern / western crowd who appreciate Japanese tradition. As a group we struggled with the sukiyaki dinner on the first night, and while other guests were served that menu on our second night we were given a different menu with modifications based on what we probably enjoyed from the first dinner. This was thoughtful and happened without us asking, and the dining room staff deserve real commendation for their efforts. Breakfast was also seemingly adjusted to suit us, and was nice and authentic. Couldn't have hoped for a better stay.

This is an absolutely gorgeous old property, with the charm and character you don't get from newer accommodation. My room was one of the smaller ones but still a great size and had a lovely view out to the river which means you get the water sounds as background noise as you sleep. All staff were very polite and helpful, particularly there was a kind gentleman working the dinner and breakfast service that spoke English and was extremely helpful in explaining the menu. There is a gift and amenity shop inside, and the property is a 10 minute walk away from the Hakone-Yumoto station so there is really no need to get transport or luggage drop service if you packed light. Included dinner and breakfast were delicious, highly recommend getting a room option that includes meals. A robe, toothbrush, hair dryer and shampoo/soap are provided so no need to bring along. The baths themselves do show their age along with the rest of the building, but are large enough to accommodate guests comfortably.

There were written English instructions for everything, including the breakfast and dinner menu. The ryokan seems to be used to accommodating non-japanese speaking people. Although we arrived 15 minutes after the latest check-in time because of the traffic problems, the host communicated on booking chat and accommodated us without problems and had dinner ready for us. They had large enough yukata size for me (190cm tall). Both dinner and breakfast had wide variety of meals, including sea-food, but also beef, pork and really good noodles. The breakfast comprised of (not only) freshly steamed vegetables and meat. Onsen baths were large there was a nice view of the river from the windows. The ryokan is ~60 meters from bus stop and ~200 meters from train station, which are quite close to Hakone-Yumoto, so it's easily reachable by public transport. Overall good experience and we enjoyed it.

The place was strategically located near the bus stop and the train station. We had a beatiful room facing the river. The room is spacious, clean and well equipped with a mini fridge, safety box and hot water thermos dispenser, yukatas. There were oranges and hot water prepared when we arrived. I like that the washroom is clean. Also the private onsen for family members was great. I like the scheduled dinner and breakfast, everything was prepped when we arrived. Great customer service. Lots of food and all you can drink. I love how charming this old traditional ryokan. It is a very nice gem and well maintained. Especially, the Tonosawa train station near the ryokan. It’s super cute and hidden, with the red train and rustic surrounding, it will take you back in time. Book your stay here. They also have rooms with private onsen.
